As my earlier work was gaining public interest, I was in danger of losing my source subject. Due to deterioration and fears regarding their structural integrity, many old structures were being pulled down or collapsing from age coupled with harsh winters and summer storms. Finding that my familiar landscape was evolving and losing the iconography once attached to it, I developed the plan for Landmarks and Mementos. In late 1999, I was awarded a Saskatchewan Arts Board B Grant to carry it out. I visited farms, gathering small objects from the homesteads about to be demolished and collecting items from the debris after their collapse. I then paired images of these artifacts with sweeping imagery of the vacant site where the homestead once stood. I disembodied the objects and landscapes from a specific place or moment, treating them as documents of change.
